Cold snaps in PA can strand a truck fast. Work through this short winter-prep list before temps drop so you avoid gelled fuel, dead batteries, or frozen air systems.
-
Fuel Treatment & Storage
Switch to winter-grade diesel early, add anti-gel at every fill when temps < 20°F, and keep tanks above half to reduce condensation. Carry a bottle of emergency de-gel in the cab.
-
Batteries & Charging
Load-test all batteries, clean and coat terminals, verify alternator output under load, and inspect starter draw so cold cranking stays strong.
-
Air System & Dryers
Replace desiccant cartridges, drain tanks, check purge valve, and consider air-line antifreeze where allowed. Moisture in the system is the biggest winter quitter.
-
Cooling & Heaters
Test coolant freeze protection, inspect hoses, verify cab heater and defroster, and confirm block heater operation. For APUs, service the coolant loop and glow plugs.
-
Tires, Wipers, Visibility
Check tread depth and inflation, carry chains where required, replace wipers, fill winter washer fluid, and clean lights/reflectors for dark commutes.
-
Driver Winter Kit
Stock gloves, headlamp, traction mats, blanket, high-calorie snacks, water, scraper, spare fuses, and phone power banks in a labeled bin.
